I would have had a front row seat from which to watch the battle between the Patriot's "Penobscot Expedition" and the British Royal Navy unfold had I been sitting on my Verona beach on August 14th in 1779!
I was even more surprised to learn that my grandparent’s farm would be in “New Ireland” – not in Maine or even New England, if the American Patriots had not won both the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812.
As a result of loosing this battle "New Ireland" was establish encompassing all lands north of the Penobscot River up to the St. Croix River. The British Crown Colony of New Ireland would be in British control for a total 4 year and 8 month.
My grandparent’s property fronts on the Penobscot River and a few years ago, thanks to Google Earth, I was able to detect the outline of a sunken ship in the mud at the river’s edge. Could it be one of the Expedition's 44 ships sunk or burned escaping the British?
Researching and assembling the information to be presented here was educational, interesting and very enjoyable. I sincerely hope you will find it so as well.
